Roseville’s Holiday Lights

Image result for holiday light roseville caHave you ever wondered how the tradition of Christmas lights began? Historians say that the custom goes back to Germany, where Weihnachten was celebrated by illuminating Christmas trees with candles.  A bit of a fire hazard, perhaps, but the start of a wonderful and cherished tradition.

The first electrically powered Christmas lights, known as fairy lights, were displayed at the Savoy Theatre in 1881and in 1895, US President Grover Clevelenad lit the White House Christmas tree with over 100 electric lights.

Christmas displays have come a long way since those humble beginnings and Roseville has its own spectacular holiday displays that include thousands of lights, animated characters, visits from Santa and lights that are syncronized to music.

Here are the addresses to check them out.

Cooking Thanksgiving for Two

Thanksgiving is traditionally a celebration with family and friends, but if this year finds you cooking Thanksgiving in your Roseville apartment for just two, try these tips.

  1. Even a ten pound turkey (the smallest you can likely get) is still a lot of turkey.  Instead of buying a whole turkey, why not buy a turkey breast, turkey medallions, turkey legs or a Cornish game hen.
  2. Cut down on the number of sides.  Yes, you love squash, potatoes, beans, but if there are only two of you, choose just a few of your favorites.
  3. Deserts are delicious, but instead of making several pies, go to your local bakery and pick up apple turnovers instead of pies or pumpkin cookies as an alternative.
  4. Plan for leftovers.  It is one of the best parts of Thanksgiving.  Make a soup, sandwiches or casserole such as turkey enchiladas!
  5. Make it special by putting flowers on the table or bringing out your best china and some candles.   Just because there are only two of you doesn’t mean Thanksgiving can’t be special.
